Weekend Highlights – Noteworthy Articles by Fellow Bloggers – Mar 31, 2012

The weekend is a good time for grazing. This is a summary of some of the delightful Blog articles I have been reading during the week. I invite you to graze through these, and also through the archives of the creative writers who have written about appetizing recipes, food preparation, gardening, canning and preserving, aspects of nutrition, homesteading and life’s choices, hopes and lessons.

You can access the entire Weekend Highlights series to date by clicking on that category in the sidebar at left.

Today, on the Weekend Highlights: That which we call a tart, The privilege of friendship, 9 things about gardening, A soup for two seasons and a special treat…

*************************************************

One word from Granny: Brilliant. No. Two words: Tastefully done. Two more: Absolutely delicious. I conclude with these words inspired from Henry Brown’s Your Little Heart: “Don’t look at someone else’s tart; It’s yours that stands apart; Don’t be known to have a little tart; But one filled huge with love to start.”

This week, Just a Smidgen serves a purely creative delight in “What’s in a name? That which we call a tart by any other name would taste as sweet… Hamlet, Act II, Sc. II – Doubt thou the stars are fire; Doubt that the sun doth move; Doubt truth to be a liar; But never doubt I love tarts…” [Read Full Article]

A NEW blog to add to our list: Savoring Today

0331 savoring today
“I believe great food goes beyond flavor or nourishment—it fosters relationship,” affirms the author. “Love it or hate it, preparing meals is one of the significant ways we promote health, meet practical needs, and demonstrate the value of those served at the same time.”

This convivial Blog is a timely discovery at the beginning of Spring, when we dream of friendly gatherings under sunny skies and the celebration of new life, when babies are born and lovers tie the knot. It features segments for everyone: Test Kitchen Tuesdays, Soul Food – faith, family, kids, life and marriage.

“When close friend’s kids are old enough to get married, it feels a lot like when your own kid’s birthday candles exceed two hands and… you wonder where the years went… We rejoice over life lived, answered prayer, and the new life that is beginning… This is… a collection of recipes we have found to be ideal for showers or celebrations of any sort. Informal fare, intended to balance well on a lap… while mingling… Hot Artichoke Dip… Bacon, Leek, & Cheddar Mini Quiches… Curry Chicken Salad Boats… Cheesecake Filled Strawberries with Chocolate Accents…”

I’ll stop here, lest we fall off our chairs from sheer imagined delight. Let’s read the article titled, “A Bridal Shower Menu Collection and the Privilege of Friendship.”  [Read Full Article]

I heartily invite you to read the About Page as well.

Alright, here is another NEW Blog for our list. Barely Poppins claims to be “Practically imperfect in every way.” I would add, says it like it is without beating around the bush, honestly and with a sense of humor, like the actual Poppins might, but the audience in this case is you and I, adults, not children. We can take it. Barely Poppins is bold and true and funny and thought-provoking, and offers a unique look at human nature. So far as I can tell, it is all about this:

Social niceties, do they still exist? “Thank goodness for social niceties… I’m not sure I would like to know the harsh truth about what everyone else honestly thinks all the time…” [Read Full Article]

And that:

9 things I moderately dislike about gardening: “Other people’s gardens. They fall into two categories: either making me feel inadequate, or leave me thinking they really need to put more effort in. Just don’t say a word about my garden…” [Read Full Article]

It has been a while since I have visited Frugal Feeding. Britain has experienced a warm winter without snow, much to the chagrin of the author. “The weather is not yet too balmy for the consumption of a delicious, warming soup,” announces he. “I shall hide my disappointment for another year… and shall instead consume an ominously large bowl of this strikingly coloured soup.” The soup in question is “Goan Spiced Sweet Potato Soup.” A brightly coloured (must use proper spelling must we not?!), creamy and spicy soup is just what we need also as the last glimpses of a long, indecisive winter give way to spring. [Read Full Article]

Finally, to close this week’s review…

I know we visited the Gardening Canuck just last week, but this was too precious to pass. I already felt that the author must be a very gentle and tactful woman. I was right. I cannot say anymore. You must find out for yourselves… [Go to Article]

Good afternoon, Cecilia, thank you and thanks for asking about my garden. I have not had one in a little while. I am a downsized Granny (by choice). I will be gardening in containers this year, on my balcony. In fact, I will be experimenting with the UrBin Grower (Can you guess where I am getting it from? ha! ha!). How is your garden coming along?
