Weekend Highlights – Noteworthy Articles by Fellow Bloggers – January 19, 2013

kitchen lawn & garden

I do not believe I am mistaken if I say that this blogosphere is ripe with miracles. Sometimes it is the a new connection with a like-minded individual that shows up as the miracle. At other times, it is a photo someone has posted. It sparks a memory and that sort of spark transforms us, subtly but undeniably.

Sometimes we read words that resonate deeply; words we have heard before, but this time the message comes across loud and clear. Most of all, we learn by reading each other’s stories. We learn about life, gardening, cooking, handling livestock, sustainability and about keeping a sense of humor when we face challenges.

“There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle,” said Albert Einstein, and this is the beginning of another Weekend Highlight. Enjoy.

Surprise and miracle! My weekly blog reconnaissance tour took a good twist this week as a new face appeared at the Parlour moments before I set foot “out the door” in search of new reads.

Welcome to Seasons Girl, from Virginia, who stopped by to read 13 Fearless Goals for 2013, a recent post at Granny’s Parlour. After thanking the author for her visit and comment, I spent a pleasant moment exploring her blog.

“We have a dream to someday own our own small ranch with horses, cows, goats, chickens, and dogs to boot. Right now we are working to start our family,” explains the author. She also mentions chickens, so I was glad to learn that this part of her dream is reality. The story is unfolding and the goal is in sight.

Seasons Girl is a journal about the unfolding dream. It features many photographs, chronicling Funny Chickens, blissful moments with the dogs, daily thoughts and musings, interspersed with recipes. Many of the entries are light on words. It is the moment that is captured. Only a few thoughts suffice, the rest is found in the stillness of the moment or in the movement and life that transpires even in a static image. The author is the recipient of many awards by fellow-bloggers. Go find out why!

You may remember that we met The Pocket Farmer a while back and soon returned to her barn yard, so to speak, to discover the touching story of how she adopted an abandoned newly hatched goose. If, like me, you’ve returned to her blog off and on, you surely know by now that deep compassion for all creatures is the rule at the Pocket Farm.

I was not exactly surprised when I came upon The Fall and Rise of Smokey and was delighted at the prospect of reading about another creature who had had the good fortune of crossing paths with “Pocket.”

You get an idea of this kitty’s trials and tribulations by looking at the picture above. “Farmer Tom called and called, but Smokey didn’t show up that night… Even though Smokey looked fine and was purring like crazy, something was very wrong.  His legs were damaged… Whatever had happened to Smokey, he had somehow limped back to the house …on a freezing cold February night…”

Make sure you watch “The taming of the kitchen rug monster,” starring Smokey the intrepid! [Go to Blog]

Funny chickens, a miracle cat and then more chickens. It almost feels like a lineup for limericks or a Dr. Seuss story!

I needed to pay a visit to The Flying T Ranch, because we had not been there in a while and something on the kitchen table caught my eye. One little, two little, three little chicks posing for a contest. It is not a beauty contest; it would be difficult to choose.

Curious? Click over to Contest: Identify the Mystery Chicks!

View the lineup, complete with captions: “Chick B: Accused of appearing in public with an indecent hairdo.” Be sure to check for recent updates on the contest while you are there. GO.

Weekend Highlights – Special Edition – January 12, 2013

This week, I felt it was time for something a bit different.

I begin each day on our Facebook page, exchanging brief thoughts, finding out who is in the midst of an exciting cooking, canning or gardening project, sharing inspirational quotes and images, reading about the antics of family pets, a homestead’s cow with a mind of its own, hens and roosters who never fail to speak their minds, children who wholeheartedly participate in the farm  life and jokes and cartoons that spice up our days when we need it most, as if we knew just what was needed at the time though we are miles apart.

In this edition of the Weekend Highlights, then, I would like to acknowledge neighbors I first met through our Facebook page. By neighbor I mean to refer to a sense of community. Of course, I cannot acknowledge everyone in this one post. I will choose randomly, just for a taste. Let’s begin with three. I am sure you will discover new pages and ideas and ventures that spark your interest so that you add them to your own Facebook list. Enjoy.

I apologize to those who are not on Facebook, but I really must take the time to acknowledge the great folks we’ve met there. Can you forgive me? I will include a link to their blogs. Yes, we are going to discover some new blogs at the same time!

Marvelous Memories is a spirited place to be if you enjoy pop culture, and if you think you don’t, you will after even a short visit. “Marvelous,” as I like to call the owner of the page, digs up memories from the 50′s to the 80′s in a wide range of interests, from entertainment to fashion, the home and kitchen.Video clips of commercials and old game shows, photos of our childhood toys, astonishing kitchen and office decor… a journey into another era that will make you smile, cry, laugh and think.

You do not have to have lived in the 60′s or 70′s to appreciate the rich and  sometimes puzzling mosaic of a society on the cusp of sudden, rapid technological and world view changes. (Above picture from January 1960 House & Home magazine).

Her hobbies include, “Blogging, Pina Coladas and getting caught in the rain,” says  Marvelous.

Weekend Highlights – Noteworthy Articles by Fellow Bloggers – January 5, 2013

This is a summary of some of the delightful Blog articles I have been reading during the week. I invite you to graze through these, and also through the archives of the creative writers who wrote them.

Food canning equipment, tool carts, compost bins, growing kits, cider and fruit presses, the Squeezo Strainer, food dehydrators, juicers, smokers, cold frames, greenhouses and so many more innovations contribute to making our lives organized and healthier and to turning our homes and properties into an oasis where the living is good.

All of these things exist because we are creative and because we have a unique ability to adapt to our environment. In truth, foodies, homesteaders and gardeners who write about their experiences are telling the ongoing story of our inventive spirit. On their pages, every tool and appliance is like a paint brush; ready to express a new vision.

Cecilia, author of The Kitchen’s Garden, returns to the home she affectionately calls “The Farmy” after a journey back to her home of origin down under, New Zealand. This dynamically visual post, titled A few Farmy Highlights (in pictures) from Jan-Dec 2012 takes us on a tour through time.

I found it especially touching. It is, in itself, a testament to a journey where one’s life vision takes shape one step at a time and every piece works together to paint the greater picture. Every day, Cecilia wakes to this tableau. So much life, so much hard work, so many chores to mark the time… and so much peace and acceptance and love. This, it seems, is the rhythm of the homestead. ashh - blog - tea

This time of year, we think about personal improvements and we make promises with the best intentions in the world. The Tea Blog suggests 5 Teas to Get You Through January.

“The first month of the year can be a toughie, especially with all the post-holiday clean-up and a bit of a sense of what can only be described as “the blahs.” But trying a new tea can cure those blahs in a big hurry…”

Reading about the flavors and serving suggestions that followed, it occurred to me that if we took the time to reflect on our resolutions and goals with a good, flavorful, heartwarming tea in hand, we might truly give weight to the moment, even make it sacred. Then, perhaps we’d keep our promises to ourselves. [Go to blog]

ashh - blog - sustainable sweet 2

The Sustainable, Sweet & Savory Gourmet welcomed the New Year with Homemade Graham Crackers.

“When I hear the words Graham Crackers,” begins the author, “The first thoughts that come to mind are smores, cheesecake with a graham crust, or my favorite as a child, grahams topped with honey and served with a warm beverage…” She goes on to observe that “kids are grazers” and that it is well worth the effort to offer today’s children a homemade choice for snacks and sweets.

Though this is my third entry in this Highlight, it is the first blog article I came upon on January 1st. Perfect timing, I thought. Graham crackers are among those special treats that connect us deeply to the warm memories that anchor the sweet moments of life into our hearts. We bring new memories into the New Year and build new memories with each successive day. Homemade graham crackers are like a batch of sweet memories. [Go to blog]
